If anyone thinks London's open mic nights, and pavements could do with an antifolk act consisting of over 35 members (and 1 guitar) then email your NAME,AGE and FAVOURITE THING IN THE WORLD to smjor@kittymail.com ---this may just be interesting.xxx

Comments: Hello antifolkers... some gig info: please note, for all the UK dates listed on this site with Thomas Truax and Chris T-T, Chris is actually on last in the headline slot. So don't turn up late, or you'll miss Thomas play! Also Joe Buzfuz is playing solo. There are still a couple of gaps in that tour, so if you promote gigs and you want to put a London v. New York antifolk package on, email me, though we've already started publicity stuff. cheers, Toby J x

Comments: Hey when is this poll thing supposed to *end*, anyway? It wouldn't possibly be closed once the Flynn cmap manages to regain a slight LEAD, could it? At this point I would like to thank my supporters and declare myself the (un)official winner. Please rise for the singing of our national anthem: God save our paaaaale old Queen, God save our fraaaail old Queen, God save our Queen. We love William a bunch, Prince Harry not so much, Hey aren't they reeeally Dutch? God save the Queen...And many more. Oh Britania, you shook me all night long...

Name: spinmaster plantpot
Email: good review
Comments: here is my latest review from splendidezine.com i think they liked it! i'm conquering that american market !! ************* This may be the most inspired cover art ever! Spinmaster Plantpot hijacks the Memorex CD-R artwork, offering a timely commentary on the devaluation of music in contemporary society. And then there's the disc, cleverly disguised as a hand-labeled CD-R... Oh, shit. Hang on a second. I guess it's just a CD-R package that Plantpot didn't bother to alter. In fact, the sheer lack of effort demonstrated on this three-song, three-minute EP is awe-inspiring. "Spinmaster" is a misnomer, for one thing; unless Mr. Plantpot, a strident Brit, actually spins himself around in a circle as he performs, there's absolutely no spin-mastery involved in these tunes, which he describes as "fucked up a capella blues which straddles the comedy/music/poetry divide". News flash: it's just Plantpot singing into a mic. There's a bit of reverb on the mic, and a few voices are audible in the background, so it's possible that he recorded The Fried Onions Brigade at an open mic night down the pub, but he might just as easily have committed it to tape in a particularly large, echoey bathroom. Off the cuff? Cuffless, more like. Faced with the choice of recording an EP or having a quick toss, Spinmaster Plantpot clearly chose the soft option. And yet... The maddening thing about The Fried Onions Brigade is that it is funny, albeit not in a particularly accomplished or comprehensible manner. I have a British friend who occasionally sings to himself in much the same manner, and I'm really not sure what makes it entertaining -- the abrupt emotional shifts, perhaps, or the misanthropic lyrics. Consider the lyrical gems on offer. From "Dairy Milk: "Falling in looooooooove is like a bar of Dairy Milk (uh uh uh) / You can't just eat two cubes / I can see you're not of that ilk / Yeah! / Girls are funny things / they like us to be thin / the ones I like are fucked! / their standards are very slack." That's brutal honesty. And here's a bit of "I Was Just Flirting": "Took your knickers off / laid you on the bed / got into your head / uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh / but I was just flirting / yeah yeah yeah yeah!" Makes you feel happy to be alive, doesn't it? Yep...alive, and as far from this guy as modern transportation will allow. I guess The Fried Onions Brigade is really just a particularly irritating sort of performance art, in which case we should all be glad that Spinmaster Plantpot doesn't strip naked and slap himself with kippers while he sings.

Thank you, Spinmaster Plantpot, I borrow from you and I can never pay you back. I smoke too much, I drink too much but I can't write too much, it just keeps coming and I call for more and it arrives and mixes with Spinmaster Plantpot. There's a small balcony here, the door is open and I can see the lights of the cars on the North Circular, they never stop, that roll of lights, on and on. All those people. What are they doing? What are they thinking? We're all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love one another but it doesn't. We are terrified and flattened by trivialities, we are eaten up by nothing. Keep it going, Spinmaster Plantpot! You've made this a wondrous night. Don't stop, you son-of-a-bitch! Don't stop!

Comments: I have it on good authority that the Bobby McGee's are actually the dearly loved offspring of a passionate encounter between Dianna Ross and The Spinmaster.... Here's what the spinmaster himself has to say on the subject: "Eleanor and Jimmy Bobby McGee are an act the like of which we haven't seen for a long time. The first glimpse of them I took in was when they played with Vermont at The Spitz. My friend and I couldn't believe the beautiful fragility of Eleanor's voice on the sparse, delicate cover of 'Where Did Our Love Go?'. Her angelic voice combined with Jimmy's sly wit and eloquent honesty produced something new and exciting. The emphasis here is on simplicity and purity. The song about them meeting at the disco, both equally shy, is enough to make you scream with empathy and delight. The songs are wry, off-kilter and fresh. They're great to look at too. Jimmy is cheeky brawn, all wide-eyed enthusiasm and likeability...Eleanor is an ethereal hippy beauty bursting with doe-eyed wonderment. To see them is a life affirming experience. Truly special and unique."

Comments: what the flip? just tuned into planet antifolk to leave glowing praise about sunday night's fest and had to read through freddy's diatribe. perhaps enjoying the acts by 'chatting round the corner' affected your enjoyment somewhat? if the diana ross cover was the bobby mcgee's 'where did our love go?' then i thought it was beautiful in a moldy-peaches stylee. in fact, i heard many approving murmurs from the crowd about this band in particular. i thought the whole evening went with a bang, and although some acts in particular stood out as top-notch, every single performance gave me something to enjoy. freddy, the only thing i can agree with you about was that the rhubarb and custard vodka, against all expectation, was rather tasty.

Comments: here's a "review" of the fest !!! Like an idiot I turned down an invitation to a roast dinner with 3 girls this evening and instead went to some anti-folk thing at the buffalo bar. Big mistake. (In my defence I was pissed). Got there too late to see Spinmaster Plantpot which was the main reason I went. Did get to see lots of really lame, shite folk acts though.. well i wasn't really watching them, I was chatting round the corner and occasionally creaking my neck round thinking things like 'Is she *really* doing some folk/hippy version of a Diana Ross song?'. She was. Now don't get me wrong I like a bit of folk/hippy music - Incredible String Band, Roy Harper, Strawbs etc - but I really don't get this Anti Folk thing. What does it mean? I saw some band recently which featured the main Anti Folk geezer and the old Television drummer and it was just straight down the line skiffle-rock. Tonight seemed to be a succession of 30 year old blokes with guitars singing not very well about not very much, with the exception of David Cronenberg's Wife who were quite entertaining. Audience filled with men who looked too young to be wearing those furry beards and women in charity shop dresses with little rucksacks which you just know have inside them a warm cardigan, a scarf, a bottle of water and an orange. Why is it called Anti Folk and not just Folk? My mate was trying to explain that it's the difference between 'Country Folk' and 'Urban Folk'. So kinda the difference between The Archers and Eastenders then. I have invented a new scene called Go Folk Yourself where these people just go and play to themselves in their own bedrooms and don't inflict this tedium on the good people of Great Britain. On the plus side, the Buffalo Bar have a new flavoured vodka, Rhubarb and Custard, complete with biscuit crumbs on the top. Now *that* is Art.

Comments: FLIPRON launch their acclaimed debut album Fancy Blues And Rustique Novelties on the 26th of July. The album has already been played by 6 Music who have scheduled a live session with the band for the day of release. You will be able to see FLIPRON live at Londons Fopp Record store at 1 Earlham Street. just off Shaftsbury Avenue towards Covent Garden on the 28th July. The band will be playing from 7.00pm and it is free to get into. There will be an aftershow party, tickets will be available for this event from the band on the night. If you would like to come along to this show please email phil@upallnightmusic.com with your guest list reservations as space is already tight for this event. Guest list places will be given in a first come first served basis. Hope you can make it! What the says about FLIPRON "Its kind of dark mysterious and slightly sinister ... (if Flipron were a cheese?) it might possibly be & Venezuelan Beaver Cheese; of Monty Python fame, but see what you think." Tom Robinson Evening Sequence "Flipron are truly quite a find. Fancy Blues And Rustique Novelties is a multi-layered, fantastically unpredictable and often morbidly hilarious ride which all discerning music fans need to hear. Lets hope this is merely the sound of them gunning that jet-black hearse and easing it onto the highway for a lengthy death trip." Whisperin & Hollerin ".....As unique as their name....Flipron play easy listening in the true sense of music that is melodic and pleasing......Lyrically, Jesse follows his flights of fancy wherever they take him, frequently arriving at superb fables like that of Youth Shall Never Beat Old Age in a Race......a song about nothing less than mortality and the meaning of life.....Flipron have an album out (soon)...look out for it." The Minds Construction "Easy listening for the uneasy... a myriad of familiar musical sounds become beaten into unrecognisable shapes.... Dark, twisted, friendly, eclectic and tuneful, with a nihilistic-poet at the helm – you won’t know why Flipron intrigue you but it is doubtless they will." National Student

Are dylan and bragg antifolk when they sing about porn? Or am I missing the point, is it like a FCUK brand for folk? Im a folk singer-songwriter myself, but keen to be anti, iv written a song called folk is shit, is this good? Is E minor allowed? Any kind advice appreciated.
